In this false color image, areas with cooler temperatures are recorded in blue, while warmer features are depicted in yellow and orange. Thus, the dark, sun-warmed dunes glow with a golden hue. This image covers a distance of 19 miles (30 km).
This display combines images taken during the period December 2002 to November 2004 with the Heat Emission Imaging System instrument in orbit of the Mars Odyssey. This is a collection of special images marking the 20th anniversary of Odyssey, the longest-running Martian spacecraft in history. The location of the shooting on Mars was 80.3 degrees north latitude and 172.1 degrees east longitude.
