Bronx Supermarket checks customers’ reusable bags at the entrance to prevent shoplifting

Reusable bags are essential when shopping, but a grocery store in the Bronx says it is changing its policy to prevent customers from using them to steal.

Bonavita Key Food on Westchester Avenue in Belham Bay has implemented a new policy that requires customers to check their bags at the entrance.

Once a customer enters the supermarket, they have to hand over their shopping bags to an employee. In return, customers receive the number they can show to retrieve their bag after shopping.

The store owner News 12 reported that some customers came in and stole the store. He says the problem has gotten worse because employees have multiple arguments with customers.

The owner claims that the increase in theft is due to supermarket spending money.
