China lands on Mars from Saturday to Wednesday

BEIJING (AP) – Its Mars exploration and accompanying rover is expected to land on the red planet between Beijing time on Saturday and Wednesday.

The Chinese National Space Agency said in a brief statement that the Tianwen-1 probe had collected a large amount of scientific data since it entered Mars orbit on February 10 and had a window to form the icy region of the planet known as Utopia Planetia, which is determined by “current flying conditions.”

Named after the Chinese fire god Jurang, the rover will stay in the lander for several days for diagnostic tests before rolling down a curve to begin exploring the signs of life. This mission is the first attempt by a Chinese spacecraft to make a smooth landing on Mars.

Only the United States has successfully landed and operated a spacecraft on Mars – nine times, starting in 1976 with the Twin Vikings, most recently in February with diligence. China will try to become second.

A diligent rover and a small helicopter are currently exploring Mars. NASA expects the rover to collect its first prototype in July to return to Earth in a decade.

China unveiled the initial module of a permanent space station this year, although the uncontrolled return of the rocket to Earth has attracted some criticism. Tianhe, or Heavenly Harmony, launched the block, the first of 11 passengers to build and deliver the station and to send a crew of three by the end of next year.

China also recently reintroduced lunar specimens, the first of its kind in any space program since the 1970s, and landed a probe and rover on the less explored distant side of the moon.
