Coles Supermarkets has ruled out buying a seafood after a shopkeeper raised concerns about claims made on the product label.
Sharing on Twitter, a user raised doubts about The Fishery’s full Rainbow Trait available at his local Colosseum.
Fisheries is an independent supplier of seafood products to Coles.
The fish’s label Rainbow Trout said it was “caught wild” – which was questioned by a Twitter user.
“This Australian rainbow trout is not‘ caught wild ’, but I am 99 per cent sure the Coles will not be bred, and if the claim is not true you should pull your supplier over very hot coal,” the user asked.
He added: “Trout fishing in Australia is a very small proposition, self-sufficient in only a few places and stored elsewhere, paid for by recreational fishing licenses.
“I believe there are no commercial licenses for wild trout, and all commercial trout are from farms.”
In response to the shopkeeper’s tweets, a Coles representative confirmed that the supermarket was “in contact with The Fisheries and that the product is currently off sale.”
Speaking to 7NEWS.com.au, a Coles A spokesman said: “Coles takes the quality of all the products we sell seriously.
“We have been in touch with the supplier and have temporarily removed the product from sale.”
7NEWS.com.au has approached The Fisher for feedback.
