Family members say Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins has died at the age of 90

WASHINGTON – U.S. astronaut Michael Collins became the first person to land on the moon on July 20, 1969, as his crew flew the Apollo 11 command line, and his family say he died Wednesday after battling cancer.

“Mike always faced life’s challenges with compassion and humility, and his ultimate challenge was, in the same way,” Collins’ family Posted on his official Twitter account.

“Please join us in remembering his sharp ingenuity, his quiet purpose and his brilliant perspective, from looking back at the earth from space and observing the calm waters from the base of his fishing boat.”

Details about the service are yet to come, they added.

Born in Rome in 1930 as a military aide to a U.S. military officer, Collins became a fighter pilot with the Air Force and retired as a Major General.

He is best known for being a member of the Apollo 11 mission, and his crew, Neil Armstrong and Bus Aldrin, became the first people to set foot on the moon.

Collins said this experience will change his perspective forever and will continue to imprint the weakness of our home planet on him.

“When we saw the (moon) rolling, ‘he said,’ Oh, this is a wonderful sphere, ‘” he recalled of the 50th anniversary at the 2019 event at George Washington University.

But he continued, “It was so wonderful, so interesting, as far as I can remember, it’s nothing, nothing compared to this other window.”

“At arm’s length there was this little pea about the size of your thumbnail: blue, white, very shiny, you’re the blue of the oceans, the white of the clouds, the rusty lines we call continents, such a pretty cute little thing, located in this black velvet from the rest of the universe.”

Collins never returned to space, but became a diplomat, serving as assistant secretary of state for public affairs at the height of the Vietnam War.

He later became the first director of the National Aeronautics and Space Museum in Washington.
