Pregnant people in Ontario are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in the name of ‘high risk’

The provincial government announced Friday that pregnant women in Ontario are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The decision comes days after the health ministry said it was reviewing vaccine eligibility criteria for pregnant women.

“In response to growing data on the risk of serious illness in pregnant women, all pregnant individuals will be eligible to register for vaccination appointments under high-risk health conditions under the first phase 2 priority guidance today,” the ministry said in a statement today.

The Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists called on pregnant women to be eligible to receive a shot, citing the Ontario intensive care unit filling and the need for ventilators.

Earlier this week, Health Minister Christine Elliott said a pregnant woman would be eligible for immunizations on the advice of a doctor. However, some expectant mothers said they were told they were not yet eligible by the province’s vaccination booking phone connection — even with a doctor’s note.

Pregnant individuals should still book their shot through the provincial call center at 1-888-999-6488, but do not need a doctor’s letter. The government said the 16-week extended dose interval was “appropriate for these people.”
