The Duke of Sussex was talking to actor Dox Shepherd, the host of the “Armchair Expert” podcast, in an episode released Thursday.
He discussed “going into the woods” in his early twenties, entertained and outlined his inner discourse as he struggled with the responsibilities of being a member of the royal family.
“I don’t need this job, I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to do this, look what it did to my mom,” Harry recalled thinking.
He also talked about the media in the UK. “It’s a mix between being on a‘ Truman Show ’and being in a zoo,” he said, referring to the 1998 film Jim Carrey in which the main character doesn’t seem to live on a giant TV set where his every move is recorded.
Harry recalled how attention was affected in the early stages of his relationship with Meghan.
“Megan and I first came to stay with her and we met at a supermarket in London, pretending we didn’t know each other,” she said, describing how she wore the baseball cap over her eyes to avoid being recognized.
Criticizing the behavior of some media outlets in the United States, Harry said the situation for him and his family has improved since he moved to California.
This was announced in February After stepping down from royal duties last year, Harry and Megan will not return as working members of the British royal family.
“Now that I live here I can really raise my head, I really feel different … you can feel a little more free,” he said.
“I carry Archie on the back of my bike … I’ve never had a chance to do that.”
During the podcast, Harry discussed changing attitudes about mental health in the community.
“Speaking, especially in today’s world, is a sign of strength without being a sign of weakness,” he said, before making a case that mental health is actually public health.
“I think the two biggest issues we face in today’s world are climate crisis and mental health, both of which are inextricably linked,” he said.
“If we neglect our collective well-being, we are screwed, basically, because if we can not take care of ourselves, we can not take care of each other. If we can not take care of each other, we can take care of this house where we all live, so it is all part of the same thing.”
Harry has worked with Oprah Winfrey on the multi-part documentary series “The Me You Can See”, which will help lift the veil on the current state of mood and emotional well-being.
The series, which will feature top guests, will premiere on May 21 on Apple TV +.
