The fortress city, despite its disputed strategic importance, has become a symbol of the struggle for control of the Donbass region.
Yevgeny Prigojine, head of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, claimed responsibility this Saturday for his men’s capture of the village of Yaguidné, located on the northern outskirts of Bakhmout, a town Moscow troops have been trying to capture since the summer.
Yagidné was captured, and the Russian stranglehold around Bagmouth, a village located less than two kilometers from the center of this fortified city, is of disputed strategic importance, but has become a symbol of the struggle for control of the region. In eastern Ukraine.
“At 7 p.m. on February 25, Wagner’s assault units took full control of the village of Yagidne, north of Bagmouth,” said Evguéni Prigojine, as quoted by his press service in Telegram.
A destroyed dam
A photo on the Telegram account shows armed and masked men with a Wagner flag in front of the entrance sign to Yakutne village.
According to Wagner’s press service, quoted by TASS, Ukrainian troops blew up an embankment near Bachmout to slow the advance of Russian forces.
“In fact, the Ukrainian armed forces blew up the dam,” the press service said, which is a dam on Lake Bivnivchny, located west of Bagmouth.
These claims are currently unverifiable from an independent source.
Fierce fights
Russian forces have been trying to encircle Baghmouth for weeks and have succeeded in cutting off several important supply lines for Ukrainian troops.
This Friday, Wagner’s group claimed to be on the front lines of the battle, capturing Perkivka north of Bagmouth and last week Paraskovivka.
Strong tensions have risen in recent weeks between the paramilitary group and the Russian military, which Yevgeny Prigozhin has accused of not providing him with the ammunition he needs.
