A West Auckland supermarket is expected to close at least part of this morning after a fire broke out inside last night.

A cordon tape blocking the entrance to Westcity Shopping Center near Countdown Henderson was removed just before 7.30am.

The mall is now open again. However, a police officer is on guard outside the supermarket.

A gate is placed immediately outside the countdown – but the damage can be clearly seen through it.

The aisle where the fire started is left black and debris can be seen near the entrance.

Outside a police officer could not provide further information about the fire that broke out last night; It exploded in an aisle just before 8.30pm.

Herald, a worker at a nearby store, said the flames flew three meters into the air – as if the flames were sending black smoke through a section of the mall.

As the workers were evicted, members of the public stayed to film hell.

The absolute circumstances of the fire are somewhat unclear.

However, it is understood that it started in the chip aisle.

Young people are thought to have started the fire, Herald understands.

About 60 firefighters were called to the supermarket inside the mall last night.

As a result the public was evicted from the mall.
