Workers rescued from Walmart walk-in freezer after car crash at Sanich Mall

SONIC (News 1130) – Several employees at Sonic Walmart had to be rescued Friday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into a store and trapped them inside a walking freezer.

Police say it happened around 4:30 p.m. in the Uptown Shopping Plaza.

According to Konst, a vehicle passed through a concrete wall in the plaza’s park and into Walmart. Marcus Anastasiates.

“The vehicle went through a concrete wall, which was not as strong as people think,” he said. “Then I understand it’s a walk-in freezer door closed. At that point those freezer people are working.”

Significantly, no one was seriously injured.

Anastasia says they are now trying to figure out what led to the crash.

“Traffic inspectors are conducting their own investigation. Fortunately, we also have some video surveillance. We’d love to get it.”

The investigation is ongoing.
