At least 47,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in action in Ukraine, independent media outlets Medizuna and Medusa mentioned In an investigation published Monday.
Citing data from Russia’s National Wills Registry—a public database that records inheritance information—and the state statistics agency Rosstat, the journalists used an increase in cases of open wills probate for men under 50 since the start of the war to calculate war deaths.
“To be absolutely accurate, we can confirm with a probability of 95% that the real number of victims is between 40,000 and 55,000,” reads the report posted on the Medizona website.
Journalists pointed out that the number of military deaths in Russia is likely to be higher because not all soldiers have property that can be transferred after their death.
A separate tally of confirmed Russian troop deaths compiled by Medizona and the BBC Russia Service lists 26,800 people whose names have been announced by the authorities.
Earlier this summer, the Kremlin urged regional authorities to do so restrict to publish obituary Which Medizona and BBC Russia relied on in their calculation.
Moscow rarely comments on its war dead, and the Russian Ministry of Defense last updated the death toll of its soldiers in September, estimating the figure at less than six thousand dead.
But leaked Western intelligence documents, citing calculations by the Federal Security Service (FSB), put the actual number closer to 110,000 Russian soldiers wounded and killed by February of this year.
Medizuna and Meduza estimated that 78,000 Russian soldiers may have been wounded or missing in action, bringing the total losses to 125,000.
