Saudi doctors are separating the baby from the parasitic twins

A team of doctors in Saudi Arabia has separated a Yemeni baby from parasitic twins. This is the fiftieth successful intervention of the combined twins.

Ayesha Ahmed Syed was born fully grown, but with an enlarged pelvic area and an extra pair of lower limbs, according to the English-language Saudi daily. Arabic News.

Twenty-five medical staff, including doctors, technicians and nurses, took part in the 7.45-hour operation, according to the state-run King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.

In some cases, the baby grows with the parasitic embryo of its twins

“The operation went very well (…) the coordination within the team was excellent,” said team captain Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabih. “The baby wakes up and opens his eyes (…) and he responds to contact his mother as soon as he leaves the operating room. We are delighted, we are celebrating our 50th victory and we will continue to help those in need,” he added.

The parasite twin, also known as the “embryo in the womb”, is a twin pregnancy abnormality that can be detected before birth by ultrasound. But sometimes it goes unnoticed and the baby grows with the parasitic embryo of its twins. Once detected, surgery is required to remove it.

The SPA, the official Saudi news agency, said the young Aisha al-Mahra, from the province, was at war in Yemen and was in the grip of a serious humanitarian crisis. The Saudi-led military coalition against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels is backing the government there.
