Players have to find a 5-letter word in just six tries and are given a new word to guess every day.

The game uses the same rules as Scrabble, where only real words are allowed in the guesses and score.

If you get a letter in the right place and form the correct word, the square turns green.

The New York Times

The game was created by software engineer, Josh Wardle, who sold the famous word game to The New York Times after it became a worldwide sensation.

In a statement on Twitter, he wrote: “Since the launch of Wordle, I have been in awe of the response from everyone who has played.

The game turned out to be bigger than I ever imagined (which I suppose isn’t much of an achievement considering I made the game for an audience of one).

“It has been amazing to watch the game bring so much joy to so many and I am so grateful for the personal stories some of you have shared with me – from Wordle uniting distant family members, to sparking friendly rivalries, to supporting medical recovery.

“On the flip side, I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t overwhelming.”
