Quarterbacks don’t often level defenders with blocks on the blindside, but Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson did in a preseason game Thursday night.
With Dmitryk Felton running the ball from the Browns, Thompson Robinson ran toward Eagles safety Terrell Edmonds in pursuit and knocked him down. It was an unusual play for a quarterback and illegal play for anyone, and Thompson Robinson was called for a personal foul for a blind block. Thompson-Robinson admitted afterwards that he was wrong but said he always wanted to do everything he could to help his teammate.
“I have a nice place for Felt. When he has the ball I want to stick my nose in there. But Coach Stefanski let me sure after that. No penalties. I definitely have to work on that in the future,” said Thompson-Robinson.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that he told Thompson Robinson he couldn’t cost the team a 15-yard penalty, but also said he liked the young quarterback’s style.
“I didn’t like that penalty and he knows that rule you can’t stop. I like the effort of a kid. I like the brawler. I like that he wants to throw his body around, his teammates like that. But I don’t like hurting the team with a penalty,” Stefanski said.
A fifth-round freshman selection from UCLA, Thompson-Robinson has impressed this season and made good case that he deserves a spot on the roster. Even if he is very eager to play when that block is thrown.
