Bruno Fernandes named Manchester United’s new captain

Manchester United announced that Bruno Fernandes will be their new captain.

The 28-year-old will replace former captain Harry Maguire, who announced last week that he would not be captaining the team, a decision made by manager Erik ten Hag.

A statement from the club read: “The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the United armband on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.

“As captain, two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to deliver the highest standards across the squad as United strive for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond.”

Fernandez joined the club from Sporting in January 2020 and has become not only one of the club’s most reliable players but also one of the most important captains.

The midfielder scored 64 goals and provided 54 assists in 185 appearances and won the League Cup alongside Maguire last season, ending a trophy drought with six titles.

Fernandez is the team’s seventh captain in the past 10 years, after Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Maguire in previous periods in the position.
