Ronaldo was speaking to the media after playing the first half of Al Nasr’s 5-0 pre-season loss to La Liga side Celta Vigo in his native Portugal.
The star of Portugal, “The Saudi League is better than the American League.” he said when asked On moving to the United States like his former rival in Spain Lionel Messi, who was unveiled as an Inter Miami player on Sunday.
“I opened the way to the Saudi League and now all the players come here,” added Ronaldo, who was substituted at half-time and tied the score 0-0.
The 38-year-old is heading into his first full season with Al Nasr since joining the club in January following his acrimonious departure following his second spell at Manchester United.
Already this summer, a number of high-profile players have already followed Ronaldo’s lead, with Karim Benzema, Marcelo Brozovic, N’Golo Kante and Roberto Firmino all signing deals to play in the Saudi Professional League. Ex-Inter Milan player Brozovic was on the field with Ronaldo on Monday after joining Al-Nassr on July 3.
Ronaldo, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, also said his days in Europe are over and that he believes the level of play there has dropped in recent years.
“I am 100% sure that I will not return to any European club,” said Ronaldo. “I am 38 years old. European football has lost a lot of its quality. The only thing that is valid and still doing well is the Premier League. They are way ahead of all the other leagues.”
The match was also the first for former Valencia and Liverpool coach Celta Vigo, Rafa Benitez, who was hired by the Spanish club in June after finishing 13th in La Liga last season.
Al-Nasr will play its second friendly match in Portugal on Thursday with league champions Benfica.
“The plan was for me to play 45 minutes today,” Ronaldo said. “Against Benfica, I might play 60 or 70 minutes. It’s better to adjust the machine little by little to get to the best level.”
