Niantic support has claimed that Shiny Raid Pokemon catches are not guaranteed after player Shiny Primal Groudon’s heartbreaking failure.

Pokemon Go Raids are one of the most challenging aspects of the game. Players can battle with friends against powerful Legendary Pokémon or Mega-Evolved Pokémon with a chance to catch it if they succeed.

Many trainers participate in these battles to hunt down the illustrious boss. In some cases, these raids are the only way to find these shiny Legendary Pokemon, and purchasing Raid Passes can be expensive for dedicated hunters. Until now, players had been operating under the assumption that the shiny bosses they found after defeating the raid were a 100% guaranteed catch.

However, after the player fails to catch Shiny Primal Groudon during the Pokemon Go Tour: Hoenn event, they are told that their Shiny Raid Bosses are never guaranteed to be caught.

Shiny Raid Bosses catches are never guaranteed

During its Pokemon Go Tour: Hoenn, Niantic introduced primal raids featuring Groudon and Kyogre primal forms of Omega Ruby and Alpha Saphire. And these raids are as daunting as they look.

These raids require at least seven high level trainers to have a chance of defeating them, not to mention the battle of connection issues and bugs. So it’s understandable why a Reddit user nelajer21 He was upset after Shiny Primal Groudon broke off every ball which resulted in a failed encounter.

However, when confronted with Niantic support about their loss, they were met with the following statement: “Now, about your concern about Shiny Legendary or Raid Boss, it wasn’t foolproof. Like any other Pokemon, it’s hard to catch and can escape or break free as well.”

Despite these claims, anecdotal evidence and a look at the game’s code seem to show that successful strikes with a Pokeball will result in a 100% catch rate. Knowing this, players gave other reasons why nelajer21 failed against Shiny Primal Groudon.

“I thought you were going fast, so I broke free,” one user commented, assuming the OP was in the car at the time of the hunt. Another stated, “Either that or you’ve lost your GPS signal,” referring to a bug that could prevent players from catching Pokemon.

This is a safety feature implemented by Niantic to deter coaches from playing while driving. We’ve seen players in the past lose Shiniz due to moving too quickly during a matchup, and this could be a similar case.
