Anaheim — The Angels took a hit on Wednesday, as superstar Shuhei Ohtani was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow after exiting his start after just 1 1/3 innings in a 9-4 loss in the first game of a doubleheader against the Reds.

It is the second time Ohtani has suffered a tear in the Champions League. He suffered the same injury in 2018, which forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery and not play in 2019. However, the Angels are waiting for a second opinion on Ohtani before deciding whether he will need to undergo surgery.

But Ohtani, the favorite to win the MLS Player of the Year award for the second time in three seasons, will not play again this season after he underwent an MRI scan that revealed a tear between doubleheader games.

“We filmed between games and he has a tear, and he won’t play the rest of the year,” said general manager Perry Minassian. “We’ll get a second opinion and go from there. It’s basically day-to-day. It’s obviously a hit. But that’s where we are.”

Despite being told of his diagnosis, Ohtani asked to remain in the lineup as the designated hitter in the Game 2 7-3 loss and went 1-for-5 with a roaring double in the fifth inning. The Angels do not yet know if Ohtani will be able to continue the rest of the season or if he will need surgery that will shut him down early. In 2018, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament on September 2nd and kept going the rest of the way until he underwent Tommy John surgery on October 1st.

“I don’t know what to expect,” Minassian said. “We’ll go day by day and see how it goes. See how he feels. I think the more information we get, in terms of recovery time and all those kinds of things. We’ll have more information in the future.”

The injury comes at the worst possible time for Ohtani, who is set to become a free agent after the season and appears headed for the biggest contract in MLS history. But if he is forced to undergo a second Tommy John surgery, which has a much lower success rate than the first, he will miss the 2024 season and possibly longer, hurting his value.

He struggled a couple of games into the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he returned to the mound after his first Champions League tear, and didn’t look like he’d fully recovered until the AL MVP season in 2021. Minassian said it’s too early to know what to expect from Ohtani going forward. forward, adding that he believes he has what it takes to fully recover from his injury.

“I will not put any restrictions on players in general, and especially on him,” Minasyan said. “He has shown that it is possible to do and excel at it. I expect him to bounce back and do what he needs to do to get back to where he was.

But Minassian said Ohtani had never complained of any elbow problems until Wednesday, having previously only been treated for a blister on his right middle finger and cramps.

He never complained about anything; “He was having cramps and was dehydrated,” Minassian said. “But today was the day he came off the game and said he had some elbow pain. Today was the first day we heard about him.”

Ohtani also hit an MLB-leading 44th homer in the first inning of Game 1 and hits .304/.405/.664 with 22 doubles, seven triples, 91 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases in 126 games. Minassian added that he said a lot about Ohtani’s character that he wanted to play in the second game despite knowing the severity of his elbow injury.

“Obviously it’s unfortunate, but I think that he plays the second match says a lot about the guy,” Minassian said. “How much he loves to play. How much his teammates mean to him and this place means to him. The fact that he played, for me, is impressive.”
