Boone, who was speaking to reporters before Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, said his players are “definitely wearing it” after being down 6-14 since star Aaron Judge returned from the injured list on July 28.
“I spoke with the team last night,” Boone said. “But try to stay consistent in what we do and how we prepare, and look forward to it [Saturday] Being the day you start turning things around. That’s the way you should kind of look at it.
“It’s not fun going through this, is it? But I feel like we’re doing fine. And I feel like a turnaround is coming.”
Bunn said he has told his players that he understands the various issues the team has faced recently, especially injuries, but to try to balance their competitive advantage along with playing the game for the right reasons.
The Yankees (60-62) posted their worst record late in the season since the 1995 campaign.
Remember to check [you] Don’t lose sight of the fact that you’re starting to play this game, too,” Boone said he told the guys. That’s because it was fun and you’re probably really good at it. Don’t lose sight of it, especially when it’s hard.
“…come with that tip, that little chip on your shoulder, ready to get ready and working. But when it’s time to play, get out there and enjoy playing the game.”
Boone said his job as director is to “paint a picture that this thing isn’t over yet”.
“We’ve got 40 games left and there’s not just the occasional one, there are a lot of examples – a lot of recent examples even – of teams changing it,” said Bunn. Now, I also realize that we never put ourselves in any kind of position or definitely thought of anyone like why we came back. But none of these teams had it when they ran it or when they started.
“So the reality is we still have a chance, and we have to kind of prepare and compete every day with the mind that today is the day we change it.”
