Tre Lance has had an amazing week, but the NFL doesn’t stop for anyone.
After being traded to the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, the former 49ers quarterback He spoke to reporters He turned around his situation on Tuesday and reflected on his final days with San Francisco — specifically, the conversation he had with head coach Kyle Shanahan when he learned he’d lost the 49ers’ backup competition to Sam Darnold.
“I’ve been really trying to get going, but yeah, it definitely took a while,” Lance said. “Obviously, that conversation wasn’t something I wanted to hear, but that’s the reality of the situation.”
After the 49ers’ preseason finale on Friday — and after only hours of trading — Shanahan told reporters that when Lance was told he would be the No. 3 quarterback before Wednesday’s practice, the 23-year-old took about an hour and an hour and a half to gather his thoughts. General manager John Lynch said Lance took the news hard.
“Trey handled it very well, efficiently,” Lynch said Thursday. “Murph & Mac” on KNBR Displays. “He was broke and he’s right. When you put your heart and soul into something and it doesn’t come to fruition, you’re going to be devastated, and that’s the kind of competitor.”
Ultimately, San Francisco accepted Lance’s request and sent him to Dallas in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick. Shanahan said it was the best offer the 49ers had received, with the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Detroit Lions also reportedly interested in getting the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. NFL 2021.
Lance spent just two seasons in the Gulf when all was said and done, as injuries hampered his development and Brock Purdy’s success last season pushed the North Dakota State product out of the starting role in which he started the 2022 campaign.
But there are no negative feelings as Lance looks forward to his new opportunity with the Cowboys.
Nothing but respect and gratitude to all [with the 49ers] “The coaching staff, the locker room, obviously the athletic coaching staff, everyone I’ve spent a lot of time with in the last few years,” Lance said. “Obviously it was difficult, but for me it was like trying to figure out what’s next and what’s going to happen in the future.”
The Faithful 49ers certainly won’t be backing their Cowboys rivals anytime soon. But with Lance now in the Lone Star State, it’s safe to say that fans of the team that drafted him will be watching his performance in Dallas.
