High-level meetings between China and the United States are once again front and center in the markets, and the official statements that followed those meetings are analyzed by some investors such as Fed minutes.

Investors want to see where the relationship is headed, so it’s important that Washington’s diplomatic diplomacy differs from that of Beijing’s — both in substance and in tone.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met last weekend in Germany to discuss Ukraine, Taiwan and the intrusion this month of US airspace by a Chinese “spy balloon” – and the US shooting it down.

Here is a comparison of official diplomatic statements for United State And China which followed the Blinkin Wang meeting.

US Department of State: The minister spoke directly about the unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of the United States and international law by the high-altitude observation balloon of the People’s Republic of China in the territorial airspace of the United States, stressing that this irresponsible act should never happen again. The Secretary made it clear that the United States would not stand for any infringement of our sovereignty, and that the People’s Republic of China’s high-altitude observation balloon program—which has intruded into the airspace of more than 40 countries across 5 continents—was exposed to the world.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Wang Yi outlined China’s strong position on the so-called “balloon incident” and pointed out that what the US side did was apparently an abuse of force and a violation of international customary practices and the International Civil Aviation Charter. China strongly condemns and protests against it. The United States is actually the number one observed country, having illegally flown its high-altitude balloons over China several times. The United States is not in a position to discredit China. What the United States should do is show sincerity, acknowledge and resolve the damage caused by the abuse of force to China-US relations. If the US side continues to argue about, dramatize and escalate the unintentional and isolated incident, it should not expect the Chinese side to back down. The American side must be prepared to bear all the consequences of the escalation.

US Department of State: Regarding Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine, the minister warned of repercussions and consequences if China provides material support to Russia or assists in the systematic evasion of sanctions.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Wang Yi emphasized that China adheres to principles on the Ukraine issue. China is committed to promoting peace talks and has played a constructive role. The comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia is based on non-alliance, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third countries, which is within the sovereign right of any two independent states. We do not accept finger pointing at the United States or even coercion of China-Russia relations. The United States, as a major country, has every reason to work for a political settlement to the crisis rather than fanning the flames or benefiting from it.

US Department of State: The minister reiterated that there has been no change in the long-standing US policy on one China, and stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Wang Yi pointed out that to maintain stability across the Taiwan Straits, one must firmly oppose “Taiwan independence” and adhere to the one-China principle. On the Taiwan issue, the US side should respect historical facts, honor its political commitments, and follow through on its statement of “not supporting Taiwan independence.”

US Department of State: The foreign minister condemned today’s test of an ICBM by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as Pyongyang’s latest destabilizing act, and stressed the need for responsible forces to respond to such major international challenges.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The ministry did not mention North Korea.
