Lindy, have you been to Karolee for advice on anything specific?

Genao You asked, “What do you do to calm down after a show?”

Carmillo Yes, and I don’t think I have a good answer!

Genao Yeah, she was like, “I keep thinking about it” and I was like, “Me too.” It was helpful for me to know that it was okay not to know.

Carmillo There are so many things I still don’t know at the age of 60. I remember how hard it was to be able to relax your mind and body enough to be able to go to sleep when you’re a mom, because you come home at, like, midnight and then you have to get up at 7 and–

Genao lunch! The bus!

Carmillo Yeah, so it’s important that you don’t stay up until 3 a.m. going, “Okay, okay, I didn’t do that line right, I’ll have to think about that tomorrow.” You have to find ways to let go and fall asleep.

Lindy, how many kids do you have?

Genao I have two stepsons. They are 12 and 10 years old. I met my husband down the street in my Broadway debut in “On Your Feet!” At the Marriott Marquis. He is a theater worker and has worked in the show.

You both have degrees. Was the corporate scientist a backup career?

Carmillo I just wanted to be a corporate lawyer. But after college, I took this assignment in a production of “They’re Playing Our Song” at this resort near my home in Lake George, New York, and I met all these actors from New York who were like, “You should move to New York and try it.” But Linedy, I’ve actually worked in the business world for a while.

Genao After graduating from university, I worked here in the city in a private Lebanese bank. Then I heard from a friend about an open call for the development lab for “On Your Feet,” the musical Gloria Estefan. I went and, with my theatrical experience from high school, made my Broadway debut in the ensemble. I was the youngest member of the cast, and I cried at rehearsals every day because I couldn’t believe I was on stage with the “In the Heights” actors I idolized.
