Tottenham accepted Harry Kane’s offer from Bayern Munich. The attacker must make a decision about the transition

Tottenham accepted Harry Kane’s offer from Bayern Munich. The attacker must make a decision about the transition

Bayern Munich have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Harry Kane, German sources report.

A proposal from the Bundesliga side, believed to be in excess of €100m (£86.4m, $110m), was accepted by their Premier League counterparts on Wednesday.

Kane must now decide whether or not to move on.

The 30-year-old wanted to resolve the situation ahead of Tottenham’s opening game of the season at Brentford on Sunday.

He is known to be enjoying life under new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou and has been tempted to stay.

However, it is not clear how the attacker will react to this development.

Kane is up to the last 12 months of his contract and Tottenham want to tie him up on new terms.

There has been no progress on that so far, which has prompted the club to consider selling their talisman in the current transfer window rather than risk losing him as a free agent next summer.

the athlete It reported on Tuesday that the clubs remained apart in their assessments of the England captain after fresh transfer talks on Monday night.

Bayern witnessed the rejection of three offers to buy Kane, and the first offer was in June, but they have made a breakthrough since then after increasing the offer.

Keane is reluctant to embark on a move once the 2023-24 campaign begins and Postecoglou’s early influence has encouraged him.

He played a full part on Tottenham’s summer tour to Australia and Singapore before scoring four goals in a 5-1 home win against Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday.

Postecoglou admitted after that match that he had been in an “open dialogue” with Keane and the club over a possible substitution, but warned of the need for a result soon for the sake of all parties.

Kane’s options dissected – leave now, leave next summer, sign a new deal?

Analysis by Tottenham correspondent Tim Spiers

Bayern wants Kane and Kane seemed to want to move to Bayern. Talks would not have dragged on for so long had the striker not expressed a strong interest in joining the perennial German champions. It was believed throughout the summer that Kane had no interest in entering negotiations to join any other side in this window.

As far as personal terms go, the athlete I previously reported that Bayern would offer Kane £25m all season, which equates to £480,000 per week, which is more than double his current base salary – so no problems there.

In favor of Bayern is the case of Kane’s contract. He could currently leave them as a free agent next summer, which now appears to be the worst case scenario for the Premier League club – certainly from a financial if not a footballing perspective.

If all this scrambling comes to nothing, then surely Tottenham can still expect a keen and committed Kane to do his best for the club in the final year of his contract.

He is said to be enjoying training under new coach Ange Postecoglou, who will adopt a much more attacking and expansive style than his predecessor Antonio Conte did during the previous two seasons.

Despite the tactics, Kane still scored 30 Premier League goals, his joint best total in 11 seasons playing in the division, but he could lift no weak side higher than eighth in the final table. That means no European football for Tottenham this season, which is likely to be a major factor in Spurs’ courtship of his boyhood club. There is hope that, with new additions including England teammate James Maddison and defender Micky van de Ven, Spurs have reason to be optimistic about the campaign ahead.

While Kane is only open to talking to Bayern this window, he will have a long list of suitors in 2024. Those could include Real Madrid, depending on the status of their pursuit of Kylian Mbappe, PSG, who sniffed. The English player this summer, and other clubs in the English Premier League, and almost certainly of interest to Saudi clubs as well.

Kane signing a new contract seems the least likely scenario but it cannot be ruled out, given how important Tottenham are to Kane.

He may have become their record scorer last season, overtaking the late great Jimmy Greaves, but he still has a major and notable achievement ahead of him, which is to win the title with them.

He would also very much like to beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals. Kane is currently 213 in the competition, and if he maintains his scoring average over the past two years, he can expect to overtake Shearer at the end of the 2024-25 season.

View from Germany – What if Kane rejected Bayern?

Analysis from German football reporter Raphael Honigstein

After a number of meetings with Kane and his advisors, Bayern were convinced the striker would move to Munich if a fee was agreed with Tottenham.

Any late change of heart would be an embarrassment to new CEO Jan Dressen, as well as honorary chairman Uli Hoeness and supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who have taken a more active role since the stepping down of CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic in May.

Should Kane choose not to join them, Bayern’s need for a centre-forward will see them turn their attention to France international Randall Kolo Mane from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bundesliga side have indicated that they value the 24-year-old at €100m.
