SAN FRANCISCO — One of the best days of Wade Meckler’s life left other young Giants players disappointed.

Meckler’s addition was part of a series of moves, as Johan Camargo also joined the MLB roster and Luis Matos and Mark Mathias headed to Triple-A. To clear their 40-man roster, the Giants placed right-handed Anthony Disclavani at 60-day IL and DFA linebacker Luis Gonzalez, who had just completed a lengthy rehab from back surgery.

Matos will return, and he still looks like the most likely option to be the long-term quarterback at Oracle Park. But Gonzalez’s run with the Giants is probably over. He would fall out of options next season and didn’t see him in their plans for the next six weeks, as others – including Meckler – passed him on the depth chart.

“He’s had some big hits for us and I actually think Lewis is a good hitter, a good athlete and an excitable athlete,” said head coach Gabe Kapler. “It wasn’t the best fit squad for us at the moment and it’s been a tough year and sometimes, even though you don’t want to lose a player and you don’t want to take a player out of the 40-man squad, you do it because you have other things you need to focus your attention on. In that case It was Wade Meckler.”

Gonzalez was almost a mid-league starter with the Giants last season and entered camp this spring hoping to get back into the mix. But a back injury required surgery, and he didn’t return to the field at Triple-A until late July.

By this point, Matos had holed up in Oracle Park, though it seemed likely he might lose his spot in some way this week. The Giants expected Mike Yastrzemski to return on Tuesday, but when he suffered a hamstring relapse, they traded Meckler to Matos.

Kapler met with Matos in the afternoon and said he told the 21-year-old he wanted him to seek a future batting title and a Gold Glove award. Mattos got off to a promising start in the major leagues but had a .241/.306/.316 slash streak and only one homer at the time of his demotion.

The Giants always knew Matos would need to work on adding strength to his structure this offseason. Kapler said he wants Matos to return that priority at Triple-A as well.

“He doesn’t have to do anything different with his swing,” said Kapler. It’s not “make that swing change or change that approach.” It all sounds good now. He’s more than that, we want him to be rewarded for good, solid contact. He can get a little stronger, so we discussed that.”

While a lot of Mattos fly balls have been dying on the track, he’s also had several balls dropped in front of him in recent weeks. Kabler said Matos will work on his defensive jumpers at Triple-A.

“I think he put a little pressure on himself,” Kappler said. “He kind of got off to a rough start in terms of jumps and pushed himself a little bit to get a better jump and maybe guessed himself a little bit. You can see that happen, taking the second to see where the ball is before he chases it.”

— Yastrzemski was supposed to be back in the lineup Tuesday, but he suffered a setback while running the bases over the weekend and will be locked out for the rest of the week. This is the third time Yastrzemski has been at IL with a left hamstring strain this season, and he had another MRI on Monday that confirmed a notch strain, but Kapler said he’s confident Yastrzemski can make it through the hurdle down the stretch.

– Wilmer Flores was a late scratcher with what the Giants called otitis media and nausea. Camargo entered the starting lineup and was 1-for-4 in his Giants debut with two strikeouts. Kapler said he hopes Flores will be available on Tuesday.
