When it comes to medal count, the United States is the favorite to win the most medals. China is unlikely to overtake the United States in total medals, but it has a chance of winning more gold medals than the Americans.

So which country leads the medal tally after the first day of competition? Here’s a look at the Olympic medal tally (and keep reading for some highlights from Team USA’s first day).

It was the last Summer Olympics in which the United States did not top the gold medal table. 2008 in Beijing.

Countries always get a medal boost as the host nation, and France is expected to nearly triple the number of gold medals it won in Tokyo.

Highlights of Team USA’s first day

First American Medal

There were 13 gold medal events on Sunday. There were supposed to be 14, but the men’s street skateboarding event was postponed to Monday due to rain.

But what better way to start the first day of the Olympics? Cook’N Bacon.

Cassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon of Team USA. The duo, who have been friends since they were eight years old, took silver in the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard final.

This was Team USA’s first medal of the 2024 Games.

China won the first gold medal of the Games in the mixed team air rifle shooting competition.

The US-Australia rivalry continues in the pool.

Americans Jack Alex, Hunter Armstrong, Caleb Dressel and Chris Juliano won the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, giving Team USA its first gold medal of the Paris Olympics.

The Americans finished in 3:09.28 to claim their third consecutive Olympic title in the event.

Australia came in second with a time of 3:10.35, while Italy took the bronze medal with a time of 3:10.70.

Watch as Team USA won the silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle final, behind Australia and narrowly ahead of China.

Australia flipped the script in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, taking gold over the United States and setting an Olympic record of 3:28.92 in the process.

The United States team won the silver medal, setting an American record of 3:30.20, while China took the bronze medal.

The four swimmers who earned medals for Team USA were Simone Manuel, Kate Douglas, Gretchen Walsh, and Tori Huskey.

Watch as Team USA won the silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle final, behind Australia and narrowly ahead of China.

Katie Ledecky, Gretchen Walsh Shine

In the individual finals, American swimmer Katie Ledecky won her 11th gold.D Saudi swimmer Salman bin Abdulaziz won an Olympic medal on Saturday, winning the bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle race at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

She clocked 4:00.86 to finish behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who finished in 3:57.49 to win her second consecutive gold medal in the 400m.

Meanwhile, Connecticut’s Gretchen Walsh broke the Olympic record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly semifinals with a time of 55.38 seconds. Walsh challenged her own world record of 55.18 seconds.

American Tori Huskey had the second-fastest time in the semi-finals with 56.0 seconds.

The 100-meter butterfly finals will be held Sunday at 2:40 p.m. ET.

American swimmer Gretchen Walsh set an Olympic record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly.
