TL; DR
- A YouTube video forces your Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro to restart almost automatically.
- The problem may have something to do with the color processing on the phones.
- Some Pixel 6 and 6a users are also unable to play video.
Something strange is afoot with the Pixel 7 series. According to multiple reports about reddit (free Mishaal Rahman), playing a certain YouTube video causes the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro to restart without warning.
the The video in question It is a 4K HDR movie clip. I turned it on on my Pixel 7, and as people on this Reddit thread reported, the phone restarted automatically. Replay only happens if you open the video with the YouTube app. The problem also seems to be affecting some Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a users but it’s mainly limited to existing Google flagships.
Before you try this at home, know that some Pixel 7/7 Pro users have lost cellular connectivity after a restart. However, restarting the phone seems to fix this problem. In our case, the Pixel 7 booted up normally, with carrier connected, after a YouTube video forced a restart.
Some people on Reddit are comparing this strange phenomenon to the infamous wallpaper crashes on Samsung and Google phones back in 2020. Similar to back then, some Redditors believe there’s a problem with HDR processing on the Pixel 7 series.
Meanwhile, some people are taking advantage of the problem and sending the video to unsuspecting Pixel 7 users as a prank. Google has not officially responded to the issue.
