Nashville police say a worker, Randy Travis, was shot and killed by his wife over an alleged affair

A former stage guard for country star Randy Travis was shot and killed by his wife on Sunday because she believed he was having an affair, police said.

Police arrested Christine Ann Roberts, 72, after she allegedly shot her husband Thomas Roberts, 68, in the chest around 8 p.m. on the front porch of their Howard Avenue home in Nashville, According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

According to officers present at the scene, Christine Roberts “spontaneously stated that she shot her husband because he cheated on her,” according to the arrest affidavit.

A neighbor, who allegedly heard the shooting, called 911 after finding Thomas Roberts sprawled in the yard, according to the arrest affidavit.

The arrest affidavit stated that the female neighbor “told investigators that the defendant also told them that she had confessed to shooting her husband because she discovered that he had cheated on her.”

Christine Roberts made no statements to the police regarding self-defense, according to the arrest affidavit.

Thomas Roberts was declared dead at the scene, according to the arrest affidavit.

A representative for Travis confirmed to NBC News that Thomas Roberts worked with the musician for nearly 20 years as a stagehand, until Travis suffered a stroke in 2013.

The Grammy Award-winning singer commemorated Thomas Roberts — who also went by Thom — at Posted on Facebook Monday night.

“The stage has gone dim with the passing of Tom Roberts,” the publication said, describing him as “one of the finest stage lighting technicians in the business.”

“Not only did Thom have a magical sense of stage lighting, he had a calm, charismatic presence that ignited your soul,” the post said.

She continued, “He was a gentle giant of a man with a steady smile on his face and a song in his heart.” “One was searching a lifetime to find a kinder, gentler soul. Tom was my friend and I loved him very much.”

When his band resumes performances, Travis said, “the music will be nowhere near bland; but, I will remember again the blessing I have had Tom Roberts being with us on the road for so many miles, so many memories.”

“It certainly won’t be the same, and I know I speak for the entire band and crew when I say that the light he truly created, in our hearts, will never be extinguished or forgotten,” the Facebook post said.

She concluded, “Tonight, I’ll look up to heaven and I’m sure I’ll see flashes of Tom’s handiwork in the night sky — letting us know he’s home, and all is well.”

Christine Roberts’ attorney, Jason Chaffin, of the D.C. Public Defender’s Office, said he had not yet met with his client as of Tuesday morning and would meet with her later in the day. He declined to make any further comment.

She is due to appear in court on Wednesday, according to court records, which show her bond is set at $100,000.
