Richard Simmons’ longtime housekeeper believes the late fitness guru died of a heart attack – though the official cause of death is still under investigation.
Teresa Revels discovered Simmons’ body the morning after his 76th birthday and noticed that his hands were balled into fists.
“That’s why I know it was a heart attack,” she said. He told People magazine, In an interview published Monday, he said: “I had a heart attack a few years ago, and the same thing happened to my hands.”
Revels added that her boss seemed “peaceful” and she believes he “died happily.”
Although Simmons’ autopsy is complete, toxicology results are still pending.
Revels, who called herself his “mate,” joined the Simmons family in 1986 and spent the rest of his life with him, something she said Simmons had predicted decades ago.
“I remember Simmons saying to her, ‘Theresa, come here, you’re never going to leave. We’ll be together until I die.’”
“And you know what? His dream came true. He knew somehow,” she told the newspaper.
Revels also confirmed a report that claimed the aerobics personality fell in his bathroom on his birthday but refused medical help because he didn’t want to spend the special day in the hospital.
“Why don’t we wait and do it in the morning?” Simmons told her.
“But in the morning, it was too late,” she said of his sudden death.
A private funeral was held for Simmons’ family and close friends in Los Angeles one week after his death.
The weight loss advocate’s brother, Lenny, asked Richard’s fans to “remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought into people’s lives,” adding that Richard “truly cared about people,” having “called, written and emailed thousands of people throughout his career offering to help.”
“So don’t be sad,” Lenny urged. “Celebrate his life.”
