Bungie reveals Destiny 2: Final look details and announces seasonal format replacement

Bungie officially revealed details of the Destiny 2 downloadable content The Final Shape today, which is the conclusion to the “Light and Darkness” saga that began in 2014. The Final Shape will debut on February 27th.

During today’s The Final Shape showcase event, Bungie revealed more about The Final Shape’s story, which will focus heavily on The Traveler. The huge and mysterious spherical entity has always been present in the pot. However, the final form would take this a step further, as The Traveler calls for help while The Witness uses his light to do terrible things.

Players will explore a new destination called The Pale Heart, located within The Traveler. Per Bungie, The Pale Heart “will contain nostalgic callbacks from the history of the Light and Darkness Saga, including a copy of the original tower from Destiny. As the first linear destination in the history of Destiny, The Pale Heart will also evolve gradually. (It should be noted that This nostalgia includes Cayde-6’s “The Mysterious Return”.)

The Pale Heart will also feature a new enemy type called Subjugators, which are capable of using Stasis and Strand powers. In addition, The Final Shape will provide players with three new super abilities and aspects – Void for Titans, Solar for Warlocks, and Arc for Hunters – as well as new exotic weapons, including the return of some classic weapons from Destiny 1.

The final look will be available in three versions, all of which are now available for pre-order.

change in format

In addition to revealing more about what the final look will be, Bungie has also looked at other aspects that will affect the future of Destiny 2 elsewhere. First, it drops its previous format of four seasons a year in favor of episodes, which will begin in March 2024 shortly after The Final Shape releases. Bungie says the episode format will represent “an entirely new approach to storytelling and content”.

Bungie has announced that there will be three separate episodes in 2024, titled Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy, respectively. Each episode will be a standalone story told in three chapters, and each episode will explore the “consequences and repercussions of the events that conclude the epic of light and darkness.” Bungie also notes that the episodes will offer additional content and rewards “more than previous Destiny 2 seasons.”

The change in format appears to be a direct response to player feedback, said Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn Recently apologized For Bungie’s poorly received August State of the Game post.

witch season

But before Destiny 2 officially says goodbye to the seasons, its latest installment, Season of the Witch, debuted today. In it, the Guardians will continue to pursue The Witness, encountering old allies and foes along the way.

Per Bungie’s official summary: “Savathûn Immaru’s ghost proposes a deal: aid in the Witch Queen’s resurrection and help defeat her sister, Xivu Arath. In return, Savathûn will reveal the key to the gate through the Traveler as The Witness prepares to activate the ultimate form. The Guardians will harness the magic of The mysterious Hive as they help their ally Aerys Morn prepare for the showdown against Hive’s God of War by transforming into the Hive God herself.

Season of the Witch will also introduce a new method of player progression called The Deck of Whispers, which will allow Rangers to customize their gear and power in new ways. As players complete seasonal activities, they will earn cards that can be used for a customized set of boosts and perks.
