Within minutes of being announced as Ms Sri Lanka 2020, de Silva was crowned and detained by the jury for damaging space.
Colombo police have arrested the current Ms. World on a charge of pulling the crown off the head of the new Ms Sri Lanka.
Caroline Jury crowned Pushpika de Silva just minutes after she was announced as Ms Sri Lanka 2020 at an exhibition at the Nelam Boguna Theater in Colombo on Sunday.
The jury won the previous year’s Ms Sri Lanka and Ms. World Championships.
De Silva needed hospital treatment after the incident, which was seen by stunned spectators in a theater and a live social media audience.
“We have also arrested the jury [her associate] Sula Manamendra in connection with the attack and the charge of causing damage to the land boguna [theatre], ”Said senior police officer Ajit Rohana.
De Silva told reporters outside the Cinnamon Plantation police station in Colombo on Thursday that he was ready to drop the charges if the jury publicly apologized, but he refused.
“I tried to get this out of court, but she refused,” de Silva said. “I can forgive, but I can’t forget.”
There was no immediate comment from the jury or his lawyer.
Police sources told the AFP news agency that a court hearing could take place next week and that the jury and his accomplice, who collided on stage Sunday, could be granted bail on Thursday.
De Silva was on the jury claiming he was divorced and therefore ineligible for the prize.
To qualify for the title, contestants must be married. De Silva divorced her husband, but they were still legally married.
Organizers said they were seeking compensation from the jury for damage to the stage and pre-stage dressing room, where several mirrors were smashed.
The jury has been accused by the organizers of defaming the event.
Chandimal Jayasinghe, the local owner of the competition, said they were “deeply disturbed and saddened” by the jury’s conduct.
